风机已有悠久的历史。中国在公元前许多年就已制造出简单的木制砻谷风车,它的作用原理与现代离心风机基本相同。1862年,英国的圭贝尔发明离心风机,其叶轮、机壳为同心圆型,机壳用砖制,木制叶轮采用后向直叶片,效率仅为40%左右,主要用于矿山通风。1880年,人们设计出用于矿井排送风的蜗形机壳,和后向弯曲叶片的离心风机,结构已比较完善了。
